The role of the foundation

The UNM Foundation is a separate 501(c)3 charitable organization that exists solely to support students, research, and learning at UNM.

Three core responsibilities of the UNM Foundation 

  • Lead and Manage Fundraising

  • Gift Acceptance and Stewardship

  • Manage and Invest the Endowment

Additionally, The UNM Foundation

  • Generates private philanthropic support to benefit UNM and communities around New Mexico 

  • Advises donors and connect their passion to UNM priorities

  • Engages UNM alumni & volunteers

  • Builds and develop public-private partnerships

  • Protects sensitive donor financial info and anonymity

The Importance of Philanthropy

In this last five years, more than $460 million in private support has been given to The University of New Mexico. These gifts directly support UNM’s mission of student and faculty success, world-class research and exceptional patient care at clinics and hospitals.

EMPOWER: UNM Foundation Strategic Plan 2020-2025

The University of New Mexico Foundation has been a steadfast partner in advancing The University of New Mexico for over four decades since its inception in 1979. As we enter the fourth year of our strategic plan, we reflect on the substantial progress that has been made and that began with the collective efforts of dedicated individuals, including members of the Foundation Board of Trustees, UNM leaders, and members of the Foundation’s professional team who collaborated in a comprehensive planning process to develop this now updated plan. Our focus continues to be on advancing the culture of philanthropy for UNM and enhancing the capacity of the Foundation to fulfill its mission and vision.
